I built a new green deck out of my old magic cards, and while I haven't found anybody to play it against, I wanted to make a picture of what my army might look like in battle.  My strategy is to have lots of little creatures with low casting costs (all elves) so I can quickly get them into play and then use spells and enchantments to make them big and powerful and overrun my opponent before they know what hit 'em. Similarly, I've made lots of fast little drawings of the creatures and things, and using spells and enchantments (photoshop) I've made a bigger and and more powerful picture. The main difference being that this is made to entertain, not to overrun.

This started as an interrupted buildling sketch and then it was embellished later with time-passing doodles. In hindsight it is about originality, and how it's overrated. We are all looking for that unique voice or whatever, but when you find another artist that seems to share a large portion of your personal aesthetic, you should be excited, not discouraged. Part of good work is experimentation, but I think most good work is the recognition and reiteration of a previous success, whether yours or another's.

Everybody wants to fix up their house in the spring, so business is booming for Beaver Building. I go to work with my neighbor Charlie whenever the art business gets slow. He wants me to let the internet know- if you are a hot chick or need some work done on your home, call the number on the truck.

Also, here's my stab at a hip web flyer for a show I'm putting on with some friends next month. I draw all the type to hide my ignorance of acceptable font choices... I'm trying to learn more about graphic design, but this will have to do for now. Any pointers/feedback would be helpful!

This is a drawing of my brother's apartment in Atlanta. It has more product placement than usual. I was down there for three weeks, which felt like a long time to be away from a scanner.  But it was good to just hang out in my sketchbook; it got me excited about real life again and I'm ready to start on some paintings.

Sometimes I get an idea for a picture, and then I get so caught up in thinking about how I'm going to make it into a "finished illustration" that I lose momentum and what started as a fun idea has quickly turned into a chore.  Who wants that? So that's when I remind myself that an illustration is successful because it illustrates, not because it flexes nuts. When it says what you are trying to say, then it's done. Anything past that is just decoration, and should be dictated by your own motivation, not presumed expectation.

This is the process for a painting that Mike Burdick and I made a couple weekends ago.  The idea was to draw several Exquisite Corpses and have the results direct us towards a creature that we could paint on the gigantic canvas Mike had kicking around.  So on the left are 4 of our drawings, the right is the color study with the compiled desirable components, and you can go here to watch a 5 minute movie of us painting it!  Thanks Danny Ribar for filming/editing and Andrew Davis for lending the space and helping us work the CD player.
