Micro to Macro : The Jubjub Bird & Bandersnatch

I got it in my head to do this kind of entry a long time ago, but it's been hard to gather up the images especially with all the moving and the internetlessness. I thought it would be something fun to see visually if I chronologically order my process in it's entirety with everything it took to make one painting.

Since my Jubjub and Bandersnatch painting has been one of my more well known pieces of work, it seems to be appropriate to see it's process originating all the way from it's fetus like 'doodle on the napkin' stage, hope you enjoy!

I found out a little over a week ago that the Pomona Art Walk would fall on my birthday, and I thought it would be fun to find some gallery space to present some of my recent work. I really lucked out when I found Studio 590_4, The owner, Anthony, jumped on board to put a few of my pieces up at the last minute and the reception was last night. Fun stuff, I hope to get space next month to put up some of my bigger paintings.

The paintings exhibited are "Catching a Gold Fish," "The Moon Balloon," "Attracking," "The Blue Possum," and "Baby Bird." If you live in the area and would like to see (or buy) one of the paintings please visit Studio 590_4 between second and third street crossing Parcels street in Pomona, CA, 91766. The owner/coordinator is Paul Anthony Rivera who can be contacted at studio590_4@yahoo.com / (323) 285-6898

Great news- I have been accepted into the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts MFA painting program!!! I'll be moving to Philadelphia in about 2 months, and I seriously can't explain just how excited I am to have an opportunity like this. I really fell head over heals for PAFA after my visit, and it became my #1 choice for a grad school. Bring it on east coast!

About two weeks ago I was invited to go back to CCA and give a demo for Robert Hunt's Illustration 5 class. This would be my first demo ever and I was kind of, you know, horrified with myself that I agreed to do it. I typically put in a lot of effort not to paint around people. It isn't because I get shy or distracted, I just usually mess up every other paint stroke and then it takes two or more to fix my mistake.

I couldn't really figure out what I could do that would be helpful to students since it had only been a year and a half since I was in illustration 5. I decided to create a demo around the idea of what would of been useful to me if I could go back in time and paint in front of myself.

So the night before the demo I figured that a pink transparent-ish sea monster chasing a gold fish would be a logical thing to paint for a demo since none of that 'how to paint an apple' stuff was me. I roughed out a few thumbs:

I had one of those "Draw while you wait for paint to dry" days yesterday. I hardly ever draw myself because I always end up getting lost in poking fun at all of my features. My TV tells me every day that every physical thing about me is flawed. A benefit from living in this $#!+ economy is that I can only afford to just shrug it off and accept my self for who I am naturally ;)

This isn't the most polished painting I've done lately or anything but If you've ever had a class with Barron Storey (or even just stood in a room with him for a while) then you know the code - if you get a new sketchbook you have to mark it as your own. I liked the visual of a baby bird walking on it's wings for some reason.

I got to take a workshop class about two weeks ago. It was a great experience being surrounded by hardworking artists for three days strait (especially with Bruce Wolfe sculpting in his studio in the next room) and I think it really helped me loosen up my paint strokes.

Aside from the workshop I've been painting a lot since I got out of school, however my work's taken a different direction and most of the paintings I've done won't be posted for a while. I hope everyone's having a great spring, I just got back from camping at the beach - I totally recommend it.

The piece below is a colored pencil drawing started as a doodle in a class I had called "Appraising Prostitution." The main focus of the class was to study prostitution throughout cultures and history, in particular it's relationship to art. A friend recently saw the 40% finished drawing as a pic on my phone and encouraged me to complete it.

		All mimsy were the borogoves,

		And the mome raths outgrabe.

Hi everyone, I would like to invite you all to the California College of the Arts Illustration Department Thesis Review. For only 24 hours the illustration students that were in thesis this semester will have their work up in the Bruce Galleries here at the SF campus.

I am seriously excited to brag about how fortunate I've been to be with a class of such phenomenally talented peers. I cannot explain the extreme variety of work that has been created this semester, and no two students are in any way similar to each other.

If you are in the area this thursday night I would like to urge you to come out and see our body of work. You'll be able to go home boasting that you just saw a hedgehog crowd surfing a rock concert, dodos flying to heaven after being eaten by pirates, a giant wine-themed robot, a devil get a haircut, a mime trapped in a plexiglass box, Humanimaland, and a 6 year old boy behead a 5 foot long 7-legged gold unicorn monster.

All of the ten large scale oil paintings I did this semester illustrating the famous Lewis Carroll poem 'Jabberwocky,' four of which no one has seen before, will be going up this thursday afternoon. Since I'm planning on selling the originals of my thesis after graduation I don't know if they will ever be viewable again after this.

	See you there!

I finally found some time to post the new personal work that I had exhibited in my senior show. These paintings are kind of like cryptic journal entries depicting memorable turning points in my life, all of which evolved from weirdish doodles in my sketchbook.

Prints and the originals will be going up for sale next month. Hope you like them!

So for anyone keeping track, I am currently in my last semester here at CCA and for my thesis I decided to illustrate the poem "Jabberwocky" by Lewis Carroll. The poem is full of weird nonsensical beasties, some of which are hardly described. Since there isn't a whole lot on how the Jabberwock is supposed to look, and since John Tenniel kind of rocked it with his own design, I decided to really try to make my own unique monster.

I'll be posting more on my thesis soon, but for now I thought it would be fun to show how I usually work from start to finish. Hope you like him!

Hello all! I decided to post a few photos from my first solo exhibition - my senior show called 'the heart of a deville.' If you would like to see more photos (especially close ups on the artwork) check out my 'senior show' gallery section :D

So I'm happy to report that the show was a big success! Approximately 200 peers and professors and friends came to check out my artwork in 2 hours! I worked really hard to put up a variety of my best work which came out to be a 22 oil paintings done over the last year. Some paintings are better than others by far, however for this show I wasn't really trying to say anything more than 'look, I love to paint big colorful stuff.'

Five of my thesis paintings were exhibited along with 6 illustrations done for previous classes as well as 9 personal paintings. I've really been trying to create paintings / illustrations that look just as good or better in person than they do reproduced... hopefully you can get a feel for how they seem in person from the photos.

I'd like to send out a very special thanks to everyone who took the time off from their busy schedules to come see my paintings! I've never felt so complimented and motivated to do better than I did during my reception. A happy audience makes a happy artist.

Hi guys! I would like to invite you all to my senior show 'THE HEART OF A DEVILLE' (cheesy title yes, however- very honest.) My work will be exhibited from November 1st to the 8th and the reception will be on tuesday November 3rd at 5:30pm. I'm really excited, I've never had a solo exhibition before so I kind of crammed a lot of work in there, last time I counted it was over 20 paintings. Muahaha...

Hello!

Hello everyone, my name is Alyssa DeVille and I am an illustration student in my last semester at California College of the Arts in San Francisco. I am so thrilled to be a part of ohger! Special thanks to the awesome creators of ohger.com for helping me on my journey to become a professional illustrator.

My thesis is what I have been focusing on non-stop for the past few months. I chose my thesis based on what I would consider a dream job- to illustrate the poem 'Jabberwocky' by Lewis Carroll. This poem is ripe with made up and nonsensical words and creatures, all of which Lewis Carroll has translated for the obsessed reader. I've been approaching this job as though Lewis Carroll's family commissioned an artist to create 10 large scale illustrations for their household. Because these illustrations are meant to be seen in person rather than in reproduction, I'll be nitpicking ever detail with the aim to be independent of the use of photoshop. Each painting will be done in oil paint.

So far it's been a blast. I live to paint, and I love to paint monsters. Above is a final character design for the 'Jubjub bird.'

My senior show will be going up November 1st-8th, during which 5-6 of my thesis paintings will be finalized and exhibited (as well as 5 personal paintings I did over the summer.) I will be posting pictures of my progress as soon as I hunt down a friend with a camera.

I hope to chat with all of you fellow Ohgers soon!

	-Alyssa
